Children’s of Alabama is moving one of its services further west on the Lakeshore corridor.

The Birmingham children’s hospital is relocating its outpatient behavioral health services from Lakeshore Park Plaza after signing a long-term lease for 8,559 square feet at the 200 Patriot Midtown Park building in Homewood.

The large Class A, multi-tenant office park formerly served as the Wells Fargo operations center campus. The bank still occupies all of building 220 and half of building 200.

The Children’s office for outpatient behavioral health services will remain open for patient care at the Lakeshore Park Plaza location until the move in early 2020, according to a Children’s of Alabama spokeswoman.

“An expanded facility gives our experienced, caring team of clinicians the opportunity to continue to provide a wide range of mental health services for children and adolescents,” said Bill Brodie, director of the behavioral health division.

The clinical staff at the new location will include a team of pediatric psychiatrists, psychologists, licensed professional counselors and nurse practitioners.

Children’s Behavioral Health Ireland Center, which provides inpatient services, will remain downtown at 1600 Seventh Ave. S.

The Patriot campus property owner, Patriot Equities, is an investment firm that specializes in acquisition, ownership and operation of former corporate-owned properties.

As we reported, the Pennsylvania-based company purchased the 45-acre office campus on Wildwood Parkway to redevelop it for multi-tenant use. At $34.4 million for about 600,000 total square feet, it was the largest office deal in 2017.

Since the campus features unique buildings in a good location with ample parking, medical real estate experts say this new lease may serve to attract more medical tenants who may not need immediate visibility but do need a convenient location in the metro area for their patients.

“It is unconventional in terms of what would normally be on the list of medical locations,” said Richard Campbell, principal at Veritas. “Children’s is potentially going to put it on the list as something to consider.”

The Patriot Midtown Park campus is one of several suburban office properties that are being redeveloped, including the former Southern Co. Services campus at Inverness and the Meadow Brook North campus in Hoover.
