The head of a Birmingham-based trucking company has been elected to lead a national trade association.

Harold Sumerford Jr., CEO of J&M Tank Lines Inc., has been named chairman of the American Trucking Association board of directors. He succeeds Sherri Garner Brumbaugh, president and CEO of Garner Trucking.

Under Sumerford’s leadership, his company has won numerous state and national safety awards and an ATA Mike Russell Trucking Image Award for the company’s work during the pandemic.

The ATA is the largest national trade association for the trucking industry with a federation of 50 affiliated state trucking associations.

Sumerford has been deeply involved in the trucking industry.

He was a previous chairman of the ATA Federation and a member of the Georgia Motor Truck Association and National Tank Truck Carriers. He and his company have also been longtime members and supporters of the American Transportation Research Institute and the Truckload Carriers Association.
