Dan Lovell represented Watkins & Eager in its relocation to 1904 First Avenue North.

A Mississippi-based law firm recently moved its Birmingham office into downtown.

Watkins & Eager, which opened in the Lakeshore Park Plaza Building at 2204 Lakeshore Drive in September 2017, has relocated to the Saks Building at 1904 First Ave. N.

The cost of the build-out was not disclosed.

The firm, which has grown from three lawyers to six since opening in Birmingham, moved from a 4,099 square foot space to occupy the entire third floor – or 6,571 square feet, including half of the elevator lobby – of the Saks Building. The firm said it also has an option on the second floor for anticipated growth.

“We plan to grow the Birmingham office across all practice areas and are very excited about the opportunities in the Birmingham and broader Alabama legal market,” said David Brown, a member at Watkins & Eager. “We always planned to grow in Birmingham so the need for additional space was anticipated, and we were also intrigued by the tremendous and exciting growth and development in downtown Birmingham.

Brown said the firm followed the lead of its head office in Jackson by renovating office space in a former department store. The firm’s headquarters is located in the historic Emporium Building – a former department store – in downtown Jackson.

Brown said the firm worked with Mike Mouron, chairman of Capstone Real Estate Investments and owner of the Saks Building, and Capstone’s team and architects to design the space, which was most all renovated with the exception of the hardwood floors and some walls.
