An innovative company recently announced its plans to open a facility in the Birmingham area.

Z Modular, which is a division of Chicago-based Zekelman Industries, will open a state-of-the-art facility in Valley East Industrial Park. The company recently purchased the former O’Neal Steel building at 3944 Valley East Industrial Drive. Ogden Deaton of Graham & Co. brokered the deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.

According to a news release, Z Modular produces modular units for a wide variety of construction projects.

The 106,000-square-foot building is located near Pinson Valley Parkway in the same vicinity as the new Kamtek facility and the new Autocar plant, which was recently announced.

“The quality of our workforce, the ability to serve a growing industry and our location has landed us another great company,” said Jefferson County Commissioner David Carrington. “Our region is ripe for growth in the construction industry and for those companies that want and need to be near it. We recognize that Z Modular had many communities to choose from and are excited to welcome Z Modular to Jefferson County and the Birmingham area.”

Z Modular will hire up to 100 employees for the new facility.

“Z Modular is a fantastic addition to the Birmingham economy and fully embodies the type of innovation that has become inherent to the region,” said Rick Davis, senior vice president of economic development for the Birmingham Business Alliance. “We are thrilled to welcome the company to Birmingham and look forward to continuing to work with them in the future.”

Z Modular’s vice president for operations Derek Henderson said the company chose Birmingham because of its location within the Southeast and “the proactive business attitude of the Birmingham Business Alliance, Jefferson County and the city of Birmingham.”
