This Merita property, the main bakery building, was sold to Flowers Foods. But another 4.5 acres behind that is about to be back on the market.

Developers could soon have another shot at buying and redeveloping the bulk of the Merita bakery campus near the Birmingham Barons’ Regions Field.
Graham & Co. LLC’s Sonny Culp told me Monday that he’s expecting to receive paperwork shortly that will authorize him to represent the Hackman Capital Partners LLC, which recently bought the larger of the two Merita properties, the 4.5 acres in the 1200 and 1300 blocks of First Avenue South.
Flowers Foods bought the other, smaller property across 14th Street from Railroad Park for $1.8 million in August, as I reported then.
Culp also represented Hilco Real Estate, the court-approved brokerage firm for Hostess, before the sale to Hackman. But then, he said, the property was being sold in an auction. Now, he’ll have more leeway to work with local developers.
He said he expects to have a listing price within a week or so.
